National Plan for Scientific Degrees (PNLS) - Chemistry
The National Plan for Scientific Degrees (PNLS) - Chemistry at the University of Catania is an initiative aimed at strengthening interest in scientific disciplines, with a particular focus on chemistry, and improving access, preparation, and retention of students in scientific degree programs. The project focuses on school and university orientation, aiming to promote educational paths in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, with particular attention to chemistry as a key discipline for the development of scientific skills. The project offers teachers the opportunity for growth and professional updating, while, specifically, for students it aims to reduce the dropout rate between the first and second year during university studies, through the innovation of tools and teaching methodologies.

- Organization and Initiatives
-
The PNLS at the University of Catania spans a wide area of Sicily, including peripheral teaching hubs in the cities of Caltanissetta, Piazza Armerina, Comiso, Gela, Catania (I and II), Paternò, Pachino, Ragusa, and Syracuse, with a possible expansion to Agrigento. These hubs, in synergy with local high schools, play a crucial role in the project by guiding students towards scientific university careers and contributing to:
- Preventing university dropout by supporting students during the transition from the first to the second year of university studies.
- Guiding students towards degree programs in Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry.
- Strengthening the dialogue between the school system and universities.
- Supporting the training of high school teachers, improving the preparation of teachers in STEM fields.
- Areas of Activity
-
The activities of the PNLS are developed across five main areas, each focused on specific aspects of guidance and education. The initiative aims to spark interest in science and promote access to university courses in STEM disciplines.
• Cross-disciplinary and Interdisciplinary STEM Activities
• University Enrollment Guidance
• Tutoring Activities
• Innovative Educational Laboratories
• Teacher Training
