Giuseppe Maccarrone, documented in more than 90 scientific publications,  from his early career studied Solution Equilibria utilizing potentiometric, calorimetric and spectroscopic techniques to investigate the complex-formation of several ligands of biological, pharmaceutical and analytical interest with Cu2+ e Zn2+ ions. The acquired skills have been then exploited in Separation Science by Capillary Electrophoresis. This technique hyphenated with Mass Spectrometry allowed to investigate also samples with extremely low quantities of analytes. Recently, the Solution Equilibria expertise has been exploited for the design, the synthesis and the analytical use of metallic nanoparticles, as well as for the study of porphyrin molecules anchored to functionalized inorganic surfaces. Recently he has also been involved in the synthesis and characterization of ceramic nanoparticles and gold nanoclusters for use in the biomedical field.
