PhD in Chemical Sciences - XXXVIII cycle
Tutor: Salvatore SCIRE'

Maria Teresa Armeli Iapichino is a PhD student in International Chemical Sciences at the University of Catania. In 2020, she graduated in “Industrial Chemical” at University of Catania discussing an experimental thesis on “Influence of the concentration of metallic nanostructures on activity photocatalytic of noncompounds Au-TiO2”. After at the same university in 2022, She has obtained master’s degree with honors in “Science Chemical” (curriculum Industry, Environment and Cultural Heritage), with a thesis entitled:” Photoreforming of plastics material to produce hydrogen using unconventional photocatalysts”. In November 2022 she qualified as chemist sez.A. She spent part of her PhD course (6 months) at Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials, Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (Portugul). During these months she acquired skills about the characterization and preparation for carbon-nitride (g-C3N4). She is currently working on H2 production by photoreforming at Laboraty Catalysis, Industrial and environmental at the University of Catania.

Thesis title: Photocatalytic sustainable processes for the H2 production by photoreforming of green organic substrates.

Keywords: Photocatalysis,photoreforming, Carbon-based materials, Hproduction

Abstract: Hydrogen is considered one of the most promising energy vector candidates for the future. The focus of this work is the photoreforming (PR) of organic substrates is an attractive way to obtain green H2 together with the valorization of waste or biomass. This process combines water reduction with the oxidation of a sacrificial agent using a semiconductor. The PR reaction requires efficient solubilization of these organic substrates through various pre-treatments. The novelty of this work is the use of non-critical photocatalysts as the g-C3N4 and metal carbides SiC and TiCN.

Stay abroad: from 01/02/2024 to 31/07/2024, Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto.
