Learning Objectives
The student will acquire the essential knowledge on biosynthesis, properties, biological interest, applications and examples of industrial syntheses of bioactive natural products. Basic knowledge of interaction with receptors and enzymes, xenobiotics metabolism and nutraceuticals in food and beverages will be also required.

Introduction. Drug discovery and drug development. Structure-activity relationship (SAR). Interaction with receptors. Enzyme inhibitors. Xenobiotics metabolism. Nutraceuticals and cancer chemoprevention.
Acetate biosynthetical pathway.
Mevalonate biosynthetical pathway.
Shikimate biosynthetical pathway.
Alkaloids: biosynthesis and properties.
Natural products containing sulphur or alogens.
